The Commission set out to make a contribution to the lives of families that were affected by the Turbi Massacre by supporting its commemoration for purposes of healing, reconciliation, and documentation.

The massacre took place on 12th July 2005 where about sixty people were killed by feuding clans in the Marsabit District of the Northern part of Kenya. Hundreds of armed raiders of the Borana community attacked the Gabbra people living in the Turbi area, North West of Marsabit. Twenty-two of the sixty confirmed dead were children, and over six thousand people fled their homes, most of them fleeing to Marsabit town.

This activity,held between 30th May and 2nd June 2016 in Marsabit County, sought to document witness accounts by interviewing elders, women, and former students of the school who witnessed the conflict. The Commission also conducted open dialogue forums with Women and Elders, to aid reconciliation among the communities.

Supported by the Columbia University New York and the Bosch Foundation, the exercise is expected to culminate into a publication dubbed "A Peoples Story of the Turbi Massacre".
