Turkana County Hosts the 6th National Youth Workshop on Culture and Heritage.

It was pomp and color as the curtains closed on the 6th National Youth Workshop on Culture and Heritage in Turkana County from 20th to 24th May 2024. The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) joined the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO on the auspicious annual event, with this year’s edition hosted by the County Government of Turkana at Loropoi in Turkana Central.

The workshop brought together youth representatives from 44 Counties. Topics tackled included Youth, Peace and Security presented by NCIC Principal Officer Ms. Rosemary Were; UNESCO Conventions and the role of youth in their implementation; Leveraging on opportunities provided by 2003 UNESCO Convention for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage to promote unity, peace and sustainable development; Trees, culture and nature- based enterprises for the youth presented by Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI).

 

Ministry of Gender, Culture, The Arts and Heritage, National Museums of Kenya, and Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) were among the partners present.

Turkana County Deputy Governor, Dr. John Erus officially opened the workshop on 21st May 2024, flanked by the Chief Officer and the CEC Culture.

 

“The County Government of Turkana is collaborating with the National Government to secure Kenyan heritages, museums and archeological sites, unique assets, and our ancestors' journey, which makes us unique humans,” said Dr. Erus. He said our shared humanity began in Turkana, “The Cradle of Mankind” and urged the youth to take the lead and use social media for positive influence and promote our diverse Kenyan cultures.

 

The workshop culminated in a tree planting session on 24th May 2024, where partners and each of the 44 Counties present planted a tree at the Startup Lions ICT Campus in Loropoi Village, Turkana Central, in line with the presidential directive on tree planting.
