Towards Finding Lasting Peace in Sondu Region.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) supported by Pamoja for Transformation Trust (PFT) and the Free Pentecostal Fellowship in Kenya (FPFK) held a consultative meeting aimed at fostering lasting peace in the conflict-stricken region of Sondu. The meeting which was held on 2nd and 3rd May 2024, was spearheaded by NCIC Chairman, Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia, alongside Commissioners Hon. Philip Okundi and Hon. Abdulaziz Farah. It sought to establish a unified approach among the political class toward the ongoing peace processes in the Sondu region.

The meeting brought together Governors from Kisumu and Kericho Counties, Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o and Dr. Erick Mutai, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), and County commissioners.

Deputy Director Public Outreach and Engagement, Mr. Killian Nyambu guided the participants through a reviewed roadmap for the Sondu Peace Initiative. The document, which was developed in collaboration with Pamoja for Transformation, outlined the milestones, timeframes, and strategies for sustainable peace in the region.

The two Governors reiterated their commitment to promoting peace, security, and unity in the region. They pledged to enact legislation supporting co-existence and suspend revenue collection until boundaries are established.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the establishment of a robust framework for resource mobilization. The framework included strategies for securing funding, allocating resources, and fostering partnerships to maintain the momentum of peacebuilding

efforts. The establishment of a notable Peace Park in Sondu was also part of the discussion.

The event culminated in the signing of a peace accord by the Kisumu and Kericho Governors on behalf of their Counties. The accord underscores their dedication to fostering peace and prioritizing youth empowerment programs to address marginalization, aiming for a brighter and more peaceful future for Sondu.
