Commissioner Dr. Samuel Mwachiro Mwawasi is a Commissioner of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), appointed in May 2026. He is a distinguished academic and economist with extensive experience in higher education, research, trade unionism, and institutional leadership spanning over two decades.

Dr. Mwawasi holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics, a Master of Arts in Economics, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, Economics and Public Administration, all from Mohanlal Sukhadia University, India. He holds a Diploma in Basic Beliefs from Madras, India. Additionally, Dr. Mwawasi holds a Certificate on Conciliation/Mediation of Labour Disputes, Certificate on International Labour Standards (International Labour Organization), Certificate in Leadership of State-Owned Enterprises, and Certificate in Performance Management (World Bank).

He served as Senior Lecturer and Dean of the School of Business and Economics at Pwani University, having been appointed Dean in November 2024. He has served at Pwani University since 2010, and previously held academic positions at Egerton University, the Cooperative College of Kenya, and Kenya Methodist University, Meru. He has served in various institutional roles including Acting Director and Dean of the Board of Graduate Studies, and has sat on numerous committees responsible for staff recruitment, academic programmes, strategic planning, and quality assurance.

Dr. Mwawasi has an extensive research and publications record. His works include studies on knowledge sharing in organisations, talent management practices, employee competency in the hospitality sector, outsourcing and cash-flow management in public universities, and academic staff appraisal, published in peer-reviewed journals including the International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science, the Journal of Strategic Management, and the Journal of Human Resource Management. He has also served as an internal and external examiner for thesis examinations and has supervised numerous Master’s and PhD theses.

At NCIC, Dr. Mwawasi contributes deep analytical capacity, research expertise, and institutional governance experience. His grounding in economics, organisational behaviour, and higher education leadership strengthens the Commission's evidence-based approach to promoting national cohesion, social equity, and accountable governance across Kenya.
